Planting Trees to Remove Greenhouse Gases

«— Click topics at left

All the other actions in this site only go as far as helping to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases that we continuously put into the atmosphere. But what can we do about the quantity of gases that is already in the atmosphere and currently driving global warming? The single most effective and practical action for removing greenhouse gases from our air is by using Nature's own method-- growing new trees and saving the ones we have. (more)

K EY STATISTIC

"Each year the Earth loses forest area equivalent to the size of Portugal. The rainforests alone are being cleared at the rate of 1 acre a second!"

The most critical actions for removing built-up greenhouse gases
1… Plant trees around your home or street.

Plant a tree to cool the Earth. Plant trees around your property or on your street. Well-located tree planting has the added bonus of helping you save on costs of home heating and air conditioning (click Planting Around Home and the How To Plant... at left). You can also donate to our re-foresting fund to have trees planted in your behalf (click Act for Global Re-leaf button at left).

2… Recycle your paper.
Pass it around again. Save newspapers, magazines, bags, and printer paper and then bring them to your nearest recycling center.
3… Buy recycled-paper products.
Pick the Recycled label. Whenever you buy paper products such as writing or printer paper or greeting cards, choose those labeled "Made from recycled paper".
4… Buy "managed-forest" products and "antique" furniture.
Check that label! When you buy wood products like furniture, paneling, or flooring make sure the wood comes from managed forests where the harvested trees are replanted with new trees. Also consider buying "antique" (used) furniture whose wood preservation and design still carry value and help prevent new tree loss.
5… Choose non-wood products.

Buy substitute-wood products. When you have the choice of buying a product made from wood or a substitute material, choose the substitute material, for example lawn furniture made of plastic or a table made with a glass top and metal legs.
